Advanced Hemp Processing Promoted in South Carolina
Growing and refining industrial hemp in South Carolina will benefit farmers, rural communities and many businesses according to a hemp industry veteran speaking at the Hemp Educational Conference in Marion, South Carolina on Saturday.
Ed Lehrburger, founder of Colorado-based PureHemp Technology LLC touted the many benefits of reviving South Carolina’s hemp industry that was closed down in 1937 when the U.S. government imposed a severe tax to grow hemp.
In his presentation, he said that industrial hemp offers communities and industries in South Carolina and across America many economic opportunities that will benefit farmers, processors and traditional industries including textile, pulp & paper and chemical production.
PureHemp Technology is one of the few companies in the world with a new process that rapidly and economically converts industrial hemp stalks into higher value products, including but not limited to paper products. The Colorado-based technology company is currently producing hemp pulp from stalks, which is used to make tree-free paper products, chemicals and other bio-products.
Lehrburger explained the benefits of advanced processing of agricultural residues, including wheat straw, hemp stalks and corn stalks, to create many consumer and industrial products. As an example, he held up a roll of toilet paper made using the PureHemp technology. Addressing what can be done, he noted that South Carolinians are positioned to advance the hemp industry locally and nationally. He said his company was seeking stakeholders in South Carolina to pursue economic development initiatives including developing processing facilities that produce hemp products.
Other speakers at the Marion Hemp Educational Conference included Eric Steenstra, who spoke on behalf of Vote Hemp; Courtney Moran, a lead expert on industrial hemp law; James Silcox, a seasoned Canadian hemp farmer; and Chad Rosen, a hemp entrepreneur from Kentucky.
